So we become a living spirit that is residing in a body that is yet to be redeemed.

The moment Adam disobeyed God, the human race corporately experienced spiritual death. However, we can individually experience spiritual life the moment we express our faith in Christ (and be born again). It is God's wonderful grace (sometimes seen as the messiness of life) that brings us to this point and although we become spiritually alive, our body (including our mind) is scarred from sin.
So we become a living spirit that is residing in a body that is yet to be redeemed. For this reason, we must continually trust in the merits of Christ's sacrifice on the cross (ever choosing Christ and never making provision for sin) we continue to grow in God's unfathomable grace. For it is by His grace that we are saved and it is by His grace that we are kept (while messily residing in this yet to be redeemed body) and it is by His grace that He will lead us Home (until we can be fully redeemed, both spirit and body).
The Bible is full of stories about people with "messy" lives. (By messy, I mean heartache, disappointment, brokenness and even failure.) Perhaps your life is not messy. All I know is that it was my mess that drove me to Him and (while hopefully ever less messy) it is my mess that keeps me depending on Him!
